First day

I'm here, I'm here, I'm here! Sitting in an internet cafe with an american girl that I met in the lobby. Unfortunately she is going to kent and not king's, but whatevs, at least I have someone to talk to. Yesterday was a real adventure. The plane flight was a huge emotional ordeal but almost all of my anxieties flew out the window the first time I saw the Thames from the air. I had to drag my two 50 pound bags through the whole airport and onto the underground and then drag them off again an hour later. When I got out of the station I blinked my eyes and laughed as I looked around at all the old buildings, black cabs, and red phone booths. They weren't lying, guys. London really does exist. I opted to walk the rest of the way, cause the sidewalks were pretty empty and smooth. By the time I got to my hostel place I was sweaty and ridiculous and sick with exhaustion. The first thing I did when I got in my room was lie flat on my back for about 15 minutes. Then I summoned the strength to get up and buy a calling card, call my parents, and find some food. My first meal in London was a ham and cheese baguette at the nearby euston square train station. It was really good but I was feeling too sick to eat more than half. I went back to my room and went to bed at 3:30 PM and slept easily until 6 AM this morning. For the first time in the last week I was able to sleep soundly without worrying myself half to death. Breakfast this morning was an egg where the yolk was not runny (dunno what you would call that), a shady looking but good tasting sausage of some sort, hash browns (fried fastfood style), a croissant (amazing), an apple, orange juice, and coffee. I figured I should eat as much as possible since it was free with my room. Orientation starts in a few hours, and until then I am going to wander aroud and see what I can see. Might go over to the british museum, which is really close to where I am currently staying.

If I dont update this for a while, don't be alarmed. I dont have internet in my room and I will probably be too busy with orientation to come over here for a few days. Once I get to my apartment on saturday, though, I will have internet in my bedroom, so no worries. I havent uploaded an pictures yet but I will later. I love you all and miss you a lot!

mandymandymandy - congrats on making it to london. my older sister studied abroad at kent and when i went to visit i had a horrific experience on teh underground that i held off telling you (and will continue to do so) until you are deeply in love with london and unfazed by all american-born fears. buy a travel umbrella and make people at home send you batteries (i dont know why i could never find batteries in london) -- and email me your address when you're settled so that i can send you post. getting mail was often the only thing that kept me going when i first went abroad. be safe, take risks. xoxo (...)

have you tried the blood pudding yet? haha. i hear that is very popular with the london-ers. have you heard anyone speak cockney yet? i'm glad you're there and safe and not in a sketchy hostel.

i think those eggs are called "well done" but i'm not sure. over easy is how i like my eggs where you get to poke the inside and it's all goo-ey.

can't wait to see you!

oh and please be sure to go to the library ASAP. they have so much significant Beatles stuff, you will freak out. when I went there I sent you a ridiculously expensive text, remember? because I couldn't handle how much I knew you would appreciate it.

Hi Mandi,
When I was in London the food is a thouand times better than French food. Good coffee and crossiants, great butter and jam. The fish and chips are good, in a pub I had the best apple pie it was thinner more crust and juice, less apples but delicious. The English humor is so funny. They are a little sarcastic. I don't think polittical correctness has diminished their honesty. The baracades and armed guards is kind of overwhelming I guess they are guarding all of the embasies. You should check out Sothebys, I think it is in the ritzy part of town, you can view the auctions going on in the lobby live on TV monitors. I saw Shakespeare's first or one of his folios two summers ago. Have you been on a cab ride? they ae all glass. It is fun to feel as if the cars are coming at you. The pubs looked fun---everyone goes after work. I never had a beer in a pub it you do let me know how it is, I wonder if they are served warm. Have you seen th carriages filed with women and men in beautiful hats for parties at the palace? Do you have TVG train pass? to travel Europe? You are so brave I couldn't leave my mom until I was 21. She actually left me. Wahhhhh! Check out some of the old basicallas, cathedrals, etc. they will take your breath away. I sure miss working with your mom. You will have so much fun walking and exploring and taking your classes.
